렌터카로 떠난 몬테네그로, 크로아티아 로드트립 - A Road Trip Through Montenegro and Croatia by Rental Car

우리가 UAE로 이사오고나서 많은 다양한 국적의 사람들을 만나게 되었다. 
싱가폴에서도 많은 국적들이 살고있지만 UAE 는 한 10배 더한 듯 하다. 
예를 들면 싱가폴에서는 아시안들 (동남아나 동아시아 다 포함) 80%, 다른 유럽이나 미국쪽에서 온애들이 20% 였다면 
UAE는 유럽, 미국권, 아프리카 심지어는 남아메리카 (내 전회사 보스가 칠레 사람이었음 ㅎㅎ) 온 사람들이 많다. 동남아시안들 필리핀애들은 많지만, 다른 동남아 사람들은 많이 없고, 동아시아 한국, 중국, 일본인들은 잘 없다. 
이렇게 다른 국적 사람들에 대해서 주저리 주저리 말하는 이유는 ㅎㅎ 
우리가 다양한 사람들을 만난만큼 우리가 여기와서 다른 나라에 대해서 잘 알게 되었다는 거다. 

내가 처음에 싱가폴 지사에서 아부다비 지사로 옮겼을때, 우리 옆에 팀에 몬테네그로에서 온 애가 있었다. 
몬테네그로가 어디에 있는 나라지? 발칸반도에 있단다. 발칸 반도는 또 뭐야? ㅎㅎㅎ
나는 그때 당시에 몬테네그로던, 발칸 반도던 그때 당시에는 아는게 1도 없었지만, 유럽인인 남편이 그나마 잘 알고 있었다. 
그러다 찾아 보게 된 몬테네그로. 별로 멀리 있진 않았지만 짧은 여행으로 가기엔 멀어 보였다.
그렇다고 안가보기엔 너무나 아름다운 나라였다.
아직 유로피안 유니언은 아니지만, 되려고 준비 중인 나라. 보스니아에서 몬테네그로로 넘어갔을때 EU 국기들이 걸려져있는걸 보았다.

아직까지는 유명하지 않아서 사람도 많이 없고 한적해 보였다. 이미 휴양지로 유명한 몇 군데를 빼 놓고는. 
그래서 그런지 아직 비행기로 갈 수 있는 옵션이 그렇게 다양하진 않았다. 특히 아부다비에선. 
언젠간 한번 가봐야지 하던 중에, 몇 년 전에 아부다비에 Wizz Air 가 들어왔다. 원래는 헝가리브랜드 저가 항공사인데, 아부다비에서 위즈 에어의 한 허브되어 다른 중동국가들이나 유럽권들을 가는 비행기들을 운행하게 되었다. (몇 년 후에 다시 철거됨 ㅜㅜ)
일단 우리는 싸서 좋았다 ㅎㅎ 많이 멀지 않은 나라들을 싼 가격에 갈 수 있다는게 우리에게는 너무나 큰 행복이었다. 
위즈 에어로 갈 수 있는 나라들 중에 몬테네그로는 없었지만, 몬테네그로의 옆 나라인 보스니아 (보스니아 헤르체고비나) 도 있었는데, 그 전에 한 번 다녀와서 그래도 좀 익숙해 있었다. 
이번에 몬테네그로를 가자고 계획하면서 보스니아를 먼저가서, 거기서 차를 렌트를 해서 몬테네그로와, 거기까지 간 김에 그 옆에 크로아시아(두브로브니크) 까지 가 보기로 했다. 
 
보스니아는 수도인 Sarajevo 사야레보에 도착하자마자 차를 렌트하고서 (공항 바로 앞에 있어서 쉬웠다) 작은 호텔에서 묵었다. 
그 다음날 아침에 바로 몬테네그로로 떠날수 있게. 

렌트카로 국경을 넘기는 우리가 생각했던 것 보다 빠르고 쉬웠으나 차가 조금 밀려서 기다려야했다.

우리가 몬테네그로에서 처음 간 곳은 Zablyak (자블약?) 이라는 곳이었는데, 몬테네그로에서 온 동료의 추천으로 이틀간 묵기로 했다.
지대가 높은 곳이라 산을 돌아서 가는 도로가 많았다. 이런 큰 바위 산이 뚫린? 신기한 뷰도 보고. 도로도 한적해서 드라이브 하기에 딱 좋았다. 

Zablyak 에 도착 - 주변에 산도 많고 공기도 좋고, 한가로워서 너무 좋은 곳. 은퇴하기에 딱인 곳 같다 ㅎㅎ
그리고 이런 전통적인 집이 많다. 우리가 묵었던 숙소도 전통적인 통나무집?에 세모세모 지붕으로 된 곳 ㅎㅎ 너무 귀엽다.  

 
 

그리고 나서 우리 숙소 주변에 있던 레스토랑에 가서 맛난 고기도 먹고. 맥주도 먹고 ㅎㅎ 
그 동네에 갔으면 그 동네에서 나온 술도 먹어봐야지. 
 
그 다음날엔 산으로 드라이브를 갔다. 4월이었지만 산이 높아서인지 아직 눈이 많이 있었다. 
우리 숙소 근처라 구글맵으로 그냥 찍고 드라이브 간 곳이었는데, 이런 절경이었을 줄이야. 주변에 사람도 없다. 너무나 완벽한것. 
그냥 보고만 있어도 너무 행복했다. 눈덮힌 산이랑, 반짝이는 작은 강, 주변에 아무도 없는 고요함. 

여행에서 행복한 내 모습 내가 봐도 보기 좋다 ㅎㅎ 이 때의 내가 그립기도 하고. 인생 잘 즐기고 있네 나! ㅋㅋ
 
목적지 없이 보이는 길 따라, 뷰 따라 계속 올라가다 눈때문에 길이 막혀서 억지로 유턴해서 돌아왔다 ㅋㅋ
렌트카가 작아서 다행이었던듯... 눈때문에 길이 막혀서 돌아온건 또 첨이네. 

그리고 내려와서 저녁 먹기전에 드라이브 - 사진을 안 찍을수가 없다 ㅎㅎ

 
그리고 무슨 공원이 있길래 가봤는데 또 넘나 이쁜것! 

이런 고요한 산책로에 이런 유럽에서나 볼 수 있는 길쭉한 나무들과 저 멀리 눈덮힌 산까지. 
웬만한 유럽 나라들보다 더 깨끗하고 청량하다. 관광객이 많이 없어서 가능한 걸까? ㅎㅎ 
한참을 자연을 따라서 걷게 된다. 강도 있고 산도 있고 강아지도 있고. 우리가 사는 곳이랑은 달라서 한참을 걷다 서서 눈에 담는다. 

 

한바퀴 돌았으니 맥주파는 레스토랑이 있어서 잠시 앉아서 뷰도 구경할 겸 목도 축일겸 ㅎㅎ 
강아지도 우리곁을 지켜주기라도 하듯이 우리 곁에서 머문다. 세계 어딜가나 공통점 - 개들이 남편을 넘나 좋아한다. 

자블약도 즐길만큼 즐겼으니 다음날엔 몬테네그로에서 유명한 도시 Tivat 티밧 근처로 가기로 한다. 
우리가 정한 곳은 티밧에서 멀지 않은 Prcanj (프르칸즈?) 라는 곳이 었는데, 티밧 보다는 작고 한적해서 선택했다. 
그리고 아무래도 차가 있으니까 티밧을 가려면 차를 타고 가도 되고. 피곤하면 안가도 되고 ㅎㅎ 
우리가 정한 숙소는 약간 에어비엔비같은 곳이었는데, 큰 빌라에 방이 다섯개가 있었고 방마다 게스트 들이 있었다. 
집주인 아줌마는 거실에서 시간보내면서 청소도 해주고 우리가 궁금한 것 있으면 알려주기도 하고 ㅎㅎ 
우리가 선택한곳은 제일 꼭대기 층, 이 숙소를 정한 이유는 창 밖으로 보이는 뷰가 너무너무 이뻐서. 

 

 
그리고 바로 밑에 있는 자연 수영장 ㅎㅎ 

길거리에 이렇게 물가로 내려가서 수영할수 있게 되어있다. 아무나 그냥 뛰어들어도 된다. 넘나 자연스러운것.
여름엔 사람들로 많이 북적일 것 같다 ㅎㅎ

내가 제일 좋아하는 뷰 - 

자연이 너무나 이쁘다. 물도 깨끗하고 공기도 깨끗하고. 이 사진을 볼때마다 그때 행복했던게 생각이 난다. 

물론, 내가 좋아하는 해물도 많다 ㅎㅎ

 
그 다음날엔 드라이브해서 근처 유명한 작은 타운 Perast 페라스트 라는 곳에 갔다. 

이 뷰 하나때문에 다른데서 차타고 온 사람들로 북적북적하고 음식점들도 더 비쌌다 ㅎㅎ 
 

또 드라이브 하다 - 저기 멀리 보이는 페라스트 작은 도시 - 이런 뷰는 눈으로 직접 봐야한다... 사진으로는 도저히 담을 수 없음. 

 

 
 

 
다음 날은 크로아시아 두브르브로크를 가기로 한다. 
보스니아에서 몬테네그로로 넘온거랑 비슷하게 국경을 넘어 가야해서, 
여권, UAE 운전면허증 (영어로 되어 있어서 다른 나라에서 렌트가 가능하다), 렌트 차 등록증, 그리고 렌트 차 보험 (보스니아에서 차 렌트할때 국경넘어서 몬테네그로랑 크로아시아까지 갈거라고 해서 이미 커버가 되있었다.) 만 들고 가면 된다. 

보스니아에서 몬테네그로 넘어가는것보다 더 오래걸렸다. 주말도 아니었는데 왜이렇게 차가 많은지? 

우리가 렌터카로 두브로브니크까지 오긴 했지만, 이 시티는 차로 돌아다니기 좀 챌린징 했다ㅎㅎ 
차도 많고 도로도 좀 복잡해서, 차는 시티에 도보가능한 거리에 있는 공용 주유소에 두기로. 
그리고나서 택시로 케이블카 타는 곳 까지 올라갔다. 그 위에서 보는 뷰도 너무 멋졌다. 
우리가 항상 와보고싶었던 곳, 왕좌의 게임에서 나왔었던 King's landing 의 대명소. 
실제로 와서 내눈으로 직접 보다니! 주황색 지붕들이 너무나 유럽유럽하고 귀엽다 ㅎㅎ 

 
케이블카를 타고 내려와서 그 위에서 보던 조그만한 타운에서 구경도 했다. 우리집 냉장고에 붙일 자석도 사고 ㅎㅎ 

확실히 크로아시아가 더 붐빈다. 사람들도 많고 레스토랑이나 젤라또 샵도 많고. 확실히 유명한 관광지이다 ㅎㅎ 

레스토랑 가격도 당연히 몬테네그로나 보스니아보다 더 비싸고요... 좋은데 오긴 했지만ㅎㅎ 뷰값까지 포함이라 괜찮았다. 
 

걷다가 발견한 한국 말, “세상의 그 어떤 보물도 자유와는 바꿀 수 없다."
유럽국가들은 어딜가나 그들만의 자부심이 있는 듯.  
 
그리고 다시 몬테네그로로 돌아와 쉬고, 그 다음날엔 다시 보스니아로 돌아왔다. 
원래는 몬테네그로에서 출국 당일날에 보스니아 사야레보 공항으로 돌아 올 예정이었으나, 혹시나 국경을 다시 넘어올때 시간이 지체될까봐 비행 하루 전에 돌아왔다. 안전빵으로.

보스니아에서도 조용한 시골같은 곳에 숙소를 찾아 묵음 ㅎㅎ 

이런 뷰에 신라면은 못빠지지! 
항상 여행할때마다 갖고다니는 신라면 ㅎㅎ 나는 어딜가나 못먹는건 없지만 뼛속까지 한국인이기 때문에. 
매운 음식은 때때로 먹어줘야한다.. 유럽오면 매운게 많이 없어서 더 라면을 챙겨오게 되는듯ㅜ.ㅜ 




렌트카를 빌려서 여행하는 최고의 장점은 자유롭게 돌아다닐 수 있다는 것. 원하는 곳에서 멈출수 있고 원하는 시간에 떠나고. 
물론 운전할때나, 주차 할 곳을 몰라 스트레스 받을수도 있고 호옥시나 어딜 긁을 수도 있는 부담감이 있지만 ㅎㅎ 
이번 렌트카 여행으로 세 나라를 여행 할 수 있게 되었다. 남편은 또 다른 나라에서 운전해서 여행다닐 수 있는 곳 찾는 중ㅎㅎ 
이번 여행에서 우리 둘 다 몬테네그로에 반했다. 
크로아시아도 좋았지만 (하루밖에 안가서일지도 모르지만) 한적하고 아름다운 몬테네그로가 더 좋았다.

최근에 본 뉴스로는 UAE 거주비자 갖고있는 사람들은 몬테네그로 비자없이 여행이 가능하다는데, 더 바빠질듯 ㅎㅎ 
나라의 경제를 위해서는 좋지만 사람들이 많은걸 좋아하지 않는 우리는 진작 다녀오길 다행이라고 생각한다 ㅎㅎ
그리고 몬테네그로 역시, 한국에 살았다면 이 나라를 여행지로 생각하지 못했을지도 모른다. 크로아시아는 몰라도ㅎ 

UAE에 살면서 여행 반경이 넓어졌고, 덕분에 예상하지 못했던 곳들을 경험하게 되었다.

Since moving to the UAE, we’ve met people from many different countries. 
There are people from many different countries living in Singapore too, but it seems like there are about ten times as many here in the UAE. 
For example, in Singapore, 80% of the population was Asian (including both Southeast Asians and East Asians), and 20% were from Europe or the U.S., 
in the UAE, there are many people from Europe, the U.S., Africa, and even South America (my boss at my previous company was from Chile, haha). While there are many Filipinos among Southeast Asians, there aren’t many people from other Southeast Asian countries, and Far East Asians - Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese - are quite rare. 
The reason I’m rambling on like this about people of different nationalities is, haha, 
it’s to show that, just as we’ve met such a diverse group of people, we’ve come to understand other countries much better since coming here. 

When I first transferred from the Singapore office to the Abu Dhabi office, there was a guy from Montenegro on the team next to us. 
Where is Montenegro, anyway? I was told it’s in the Balkans. And what even are the Balkans? Hahaha
Back then, I didn’t know a single thing about Montenegro or the Balkan Peninsula, but my husband, who’s European, knew a bit more about them. 
So I ended up looking up Montenegro. It wasn’t that far away, but it seemed too far for a short trip.
Still, it was too beautiful a country to pass up.
It’s not yet part of the European Union, but it’s a country preparing to join. When I crossed from Bosnia into Montenegro, I saw EU flags flying.

Since it’s not very well-known yet, it seemed quiet and uncrowded - except for a few places that are already famous as resort destinations. 
Maybe that’s why there weren’t that many flight options available yet, especially from Abu Dhabi. 
I’d been thinking I should visit someday, and then a few years ago, Wizz Air started operating out of Abu Dhabi. Originally a Hungarian low-cost airline, it became one of Wizz Air’s hubs in Abu Dhabi, operating flights to other Middle Eastern countries and Europe. (It was discontinued a few years later, though :'()
First of all, we loved it because it was cheap, haha. Being able to travel to countries not too far away at such low prices was a huge joy for us. 
Montenegro wasn’t among the destinations Wizz Air served, but Bosnia (Bosnia and Herzegovina), which borders Montenegro, was on the list—and since we’d visited there once before, we were already somewhat familiar with the area. 
When we planned this trip to Montenegro, we decided to go to Bosnia first, rent a car there, and drive to Montenegro - and since we were already there, we figured we might as well visit neighboring Croatia (Dubrovnik) too. 
 
As soon as I arrived in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia (it was easy since the rental car office was right in front of the airport), I rented a car and stayed at a small hotel.
That way, I could leave for Montenegro first thing the next morning. 

 

 

Crossing the border in our rental car was faster and easier than we’d expected, though we had to wait a bit because of a traffic jam.

 

The first place we visited in Montenegro was Zablyak (Zablyak?), where we decided to stay for two days on the recommendation of a colleague from Montenegro.

Since it was at a high elevation, there were many winding mountain roads. We even saw some amazing views—like this huge rock mountain that looked like it had been cut right through? The roads were quiet, making it perfect for a drive.

 

We arrived in Zablyak - it’s a wonderful place with lots of mountains nearby, fresh air, and a laid-back atmosphere. It seems like the perfect spot to retire, haha.

There are also lots of traditional houses like this. The place we stayed at was a traditional log cabin? with a gabled roof, haha - it was so cute.

 

After that, we went to a restaurant near our lodging and had some delicious meat. We also had some beer, haha.

If you’re in that area, you’ve got to try the local beer.

 

The next day, we went for a drive up into the mountains. It was April, but maybe because the mountains were so high, there was still a lot of snow.

It was near our place, so we just looked it up on Google Maps and drove there - I had no idea the scenery would be this breathtaking. There wasn’t a soul around. It was absolutely perfect.

Just looking at it made me so happy. The snow-covered mountains, the sparkling little river, and the silence with no one else around.

 

Even I think I look happy in these travel photos, haha. I actually miss that version of myself. I’m really enjoying life, aren’t I? Haha

 

I kept driving up, following the road and the views with no specific destination in mind, until the road was blocked by snow, so I had to make a U-turn and head back, haha.

I guess it was a good thing the rental car was small… This is the first time I’ve ever had to turn back because the road was blocked by snow.

 

Then, after coming back down, I went for a drive before dinner—I just couldn’t help but take pictures, haha.

I also stopped by a park I’d heard about, and it was so beautiful!

 

Such a peaceful walking path, with those tall, slender trees you’d expect to see in Europe, and the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

It’s cleaner and more refreshing than most European countries. Maybe that’s because there aren’t many tourists? Haha

I ended up walking along nature for quite a while. There’s a river, mountains, and even a dog. Since it’s so different from where we live, I walked for a long time, stopping to take it all in.

 

Since we’d walked a full lap, we found a restaurant that served beer and decided to sit down for a bit to enjoy the view and quench our thirst, haha.

The dog stayed right by our side, as if to keep watch over us. One thing that’s the same no matter where you go in the world—dogs absolutely love my husband.

 

Since we’d enjoyed Jabljak to our heart’s content, we decided to head to Tivat—a famous city in Montenegro—the next day.

The place we chose was Prcanj (Prkanj?), not far from Tivat; we picked it because it’s smaller and quieter than Tivat.

And since we had a car, we could always drive to Tivat if we wanted to. Or skip it if we were tired, haha.

The place we booked was a bit like an Airbnb—a large villa with five rooms, each occupied by different guests.

The landlady spent her time in the living room, cleaning up and answering any questions we had, haha.

We chose the top floor—the reason we picked this place was because the view from the window was absolutely gorgeous.

 

And there’s a natural swimming pool right below it, haha

 

You can walk down to the water right from the street and go for a swim. Anyone can just jump right in. It’s so natural.

It seems like it’ll be packed with people in the summer, haha.

 

Nature is so beautiful. The water is clear, and the air is fresh. Every time I look at this photo, I remember how happy I was back then.

Of course, there’s plenty of seafood, which I love, haha.

 

The next day, we drove to a famous little town nearby called Perast.

 

It was packed with people who’d driven in from other places just for the view, and the restaurants were more expensive, haha.

Another drive - the little town of Perast visible in the distance - you really have to see a view like this with your own eyes... It’s impossible to capture in a photo.

 

 

The next day, we decided to go to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Since we had to cross the border - similar to when we crossed from Bosnia into Montenegro - all we needed to bring were our passports, my UAE driver’s license (which is in English, so I can rent a car in other countries), the rental car registration, and the rental car insurance (which was already covered when I rented the car in Bosnia, since I’d mentioned we’d be crossing the border into Montenegro and Croatia).

 

It took longer than crossing from Bosnia into Montenegro. It wasn’t even the weekend - why were there so many cars?

 

Although we drove our rental car all the way to Dubrovnik, getting around this city by car was a bit of a challenge, haha.

With so much traffic and the roads being a bit complicated, we decided to leave the car at a public parking lot within walking distance of the city center.

Then we took a taxi up to the cable car station. The view from up there was absolutely stunning.

It was a place we’d always wanted to visit—the iconic King’s Landing from *Game of Thrones*.

To actually be here and see it with my own eyes! The orange roofs are so quintessentially European and cute, haha.

 

 

After riding the cable car back down, we explored the little town we’d seen from above. I even bought a magnet to put on my fridge at home, haha.

Croatia is definitely more crowded. There are lots of people, and plenty of restaurants and gelato shops. It’s definitely a famous tourist spot, haha.

Restaurant prices are naturally more expensive than in Montenegro or Bosnia... It was nice to visit, though, haha. Since the price included the view, it was worth it.

 

 

While walking, I came across a quote in Korean: “No treasure in the world can be exchanged for freedom.”

It seems like European countries have their own sense of pride no matter where you go.

 

Then I returned to Montenegro to rest, and the next day I went back to Bosnia.

Originally, I was planning to return to Sarajevo Airport in Bosnia on the day of my departure from Montenegro, but I came back a day before my flight just in case there were delays crossing the border again. Just to be on the safe side.

 

In Bosnia, I also found a place to stay in a quiet, rural-like area, haha.

 

 

 

You can’t have a view like this without Shin Ramyun!

I always bring Shin Ramyun with me whenever I travel, haha. I can eat just about anything wherever I go, but I’m Korean through and through.

I have to eat spicy food every once in a while… Since there aren’t many spicy options in Europe, I end up bringing even more ramen with me :'(

 

The best part about traveling with a rental car is the freedom to roam around. You can stop wherever you want and leave whenever you want.

Of course, there’s the stress of driving or not knowing where to park, and the worry that I might accidentally scratch the car here or there, haha.

Thanks to this rental car trip, we were able to visit three countries. My husband is already looking for another country where we can travel by car, haha.

On this trip, we both fell in love with Montenegro.

Croatia was nice too (though maybe that’s because we were only there for a day), but we liked the quiet and beautiful Montenegro even more.

 

A small church we discovered while driving - a place we turned back to because it was so pretty as we passed by.

 

 

According to a recent news report, people with UAE residence visas can travel to Montenegro without a visa, so it looks like things are going to get even busier, haha.

While that’s good for the country’s economy, we don’t really like crowds, so we’re glad we went when we did, haha.

And as for Montenegro, if I’d been living in Korea, I might never have considered it as a travel destination. Croatia, maybe, but not Montenegro, haha.

 

Living in the UAE has expanded my travel horizons, and thanks to that, I’ve been able to experience places I never expected to visit.
