아부다비에서 근교여행 오만 제벨 아크다르 산 - Jebel Ahkdar (Green Mountain) Oman trip

어제 오만으로 주말여행 간다고 블로그 썼었는데
제벨 아크다르 (말 그대로 번역 하자면 초록산ㅋㅋ, 한국발음으로 제대로 말하자면 아ㅋ다ㄹ 아랍어 발음 어려움)는 우리가 너무 좋아하는 곳이라 쓸게 많아서 따로 쓰기로 결정했다. 이 산에 총 네 다섯번 간듯. 또 가도 좋다.


첫번째 갔을땐
어제 썼었던 니즈와 시티근처 숙박집 베이트 알 사바에서 현장에서 신청한 당일치기 데이트립으로 주인이 직접 자기 차로 데려다주고 여기저기 같이 다녔다.
지금 생각하면 그땐 니즈와도 베이트 알사바 숙박집도 지금보단 덜 유명했어서 그렇게 그 주인이랑 다녀올 수 있었지, 지금은 너무 유명해져서 숙박집 주인을 볼수도 없고 (데이투어를 하기도 했고 워낙 자주가서 얼굴도 익히고 숙소도 와챕으로 직접 예약함ㅋㅋ) 매번 갈때마다 물어보면 투어 중이거나 투어 관련 비즈니스때문에 바쁘다고 한다. 지금 베이트 알사바는 갈때마다 관광객들로 바글바글하다. 단체 관광객들이 근처에서 투어하는 중간에 커피사거나 화장실 가는 잠깐의 스탑오버정도로 많이 들렸다 가는듯.

  
제벨아크다르 (초록산 ㅎㅎ) 산책

베이트 알사바에서 차로 여기까지 올라오는데 한 시간 정도. 길이 꼬불꼬불하고 경사가심해서 차로 올라갈때 군인들이 들어오는 차들이 산에 갈 수있는지 아닌지 확인하는 체크포인트를 지나야한다.

4x4 차나 All wheel drive 가 아닌이상 못 올라가게 되어있음.
체크포인트부터 산위에 주차장까지 대략 30km이고, 지도로는 40분정도가 나온다.
이 긴 도로는 워낙 꼬불꼬불하고 가팔라서, 특히나 내려갈때는 메뉴얼 기어로 1단 이나 2단으로 해야 브레이크에 부담이 가지 않는다고 한다. - 우리가 몇번 다른 투어 통해서 올라갈때 배운것, 그리고 남편이 알려준것 ㅎㅎ 남편이 운전해서 나는 잘모름 ㅠㅠㅋㅋ
체크포인트에 작은 세단이나 승용차들 많이 주차해논거 보면 산에있는 호텔이나 현지 투어 가이드 통해서 올라가고 내려오는 사람들 많은 것 같다.

우리도 이 산에 간지 네번째 만에 쏘렌토로 운전해서 갔다. 체크포인트에서 군인 아저씨가 차 이리저리 확인하고서 (이마도 오만에선 흔하지 않은 차 일거라 더) 통과시켜줌.
아 아니면 니즈와나 이 동네 밑에 차 렌트샵에서 렌트해서 올라와도 된다. 메뉴얼 기어넣고 가파른 산에서 운전 자신있다면… 추천.

아무튼 차 주차해놓고 걸어 올라가면 이런 다닥다닥 붙어있는 집들 사이에 좁은 골목길로 이리저리 다닐 수 있는데 (계단도 억수로 많음, 여기 애들이 대체적으로 왜 날씬한지 알겠더라니 ㅎㅎ)

정신없이 가다보면 이런 산으로 가는 산책로가 나온다.
전 오만 여행편에서 말했듯이 오만에 있는 산 어딜가나 있는 수로를 따라서 가다보면 산도 나오고 밭도 나오고 모스크도 나오고 ㅎㅎ
찐현지인들의 삶을 볼 수 있는 곳.
네번인지 다섯번인지 갔었어도 또 가고싶은 곳.

다음으로 간 곳은 알 수즈라 라는 작은 빌리지.

여긴 진짜 현지인들 아닌이상은 잘 돌아다니지도 알지도 못할 곳. 구글맵에도 제대로 안나온다 ㅋㅋ(이동네 사람들 구글맵도 잘 안씀)
아 지금은 그래도 나오네. 특이한 호텔이라 급 유명해진 것 같다.

알 수즈라의 역사 마을 · 4.7★(469) · 역사적 명소

원래 이 산동네에서 한 200명되는 사람들이 살았었는데 지금은 다 도시로 옮겨가서 살아서 아무도 살지 않고, 살았던 집은 유지하고서 호텔로 만들어서 산속에 숨어있는 관광지가 되었다.
어떻게 이런 산속 절벽같은 곳에 집을 지었으며 터를 잡고 살았을까? 맨 처음에 이리로 옮겨와서 살기 시작한 사람/가족의 스토리가 궁금하다.

차가 들어갈수 없는 곳에서 부터는 도보로 걸어가야하는데 계단 지옥에다 바닥엔 당나귀 떵들이 왜이렇게 많은지 ㅋㅋ 새벽에 돌어다니다 와서 싸고 간단다.
이 숙소에 묵을 게스트들의 짐을 계단으로 다 옮겨다니기 힘들어서 케이블로 짐을 옮길 수 있게 해놨다. 신기 ㅋㅋ

여기 오면 새소리 동물소리 곤충소리밖에 안들린다. 주변에 진짜 아무것도 없기 때문에 ㅋㅋ

약간 승려들이 속세를 떠나 깊은 산속으로 기도하러 들어오는 곳인 느낌이랄까 ㅎㅎ
여기에 오만에서 유명한 카페도 있다. 와서 커피나 디저트 먹고가기 좋음.

작은 모스크도 있다. 귀염 ㅎㅎ





우리가 두번째로 왔을때는 다른 경험을 하고싶어서 찾아본 Soprano Pizza Experience 였다.
이 곳을 알게된건 전에 니즈와 왔을때 구글맵에서 피자집 검색했을때 나온게 여기였는데, 남편이 확인차 전화해 보니 여긴 피자를 파는 레스토랑이 아니라 동네 경험하고서 피자를 만들어 먹는 투어같은 거라고 설명해줘서 그 다음에 이동네 또 올때 미리 신청하고 옴.

Soprano Experience · 5.0★(126) · 이탈리아 음식점

이 동네에서 태어난 사미 아저씨가 사람들을 모아다가 만나서 지금은 아무도 살지않는 동네 구경을 시켜준다.
옛날에 집을 어떻게 어떤 재료로 만들었는지 부터 해서, 이곳은 수퍼마켓이었고 이곳은 다른 가족들이 살던 집이었고 여긴 작은 박물관이되었다 등등.
이렇게 공기도 좋고 자연에 어우러진 곳에 사람들이 다 떠나가서 아무도 살지않는건 좀 슬프지만 나름대로 잘 보존을 해놔서 신기했다.

그리고나서는 본인이 살던 집에 가서 살았던 흔적을 소개해 준다. 여긴 거실, 부엌 그리고 안방, 본인 아버지가 쓰던 옷장 티비 등등. 오래되었지만 사람이 살았던 흔적은 느낄수 있었다.
그리고 옥상으로 올라가면 본인이 미리 그 전날에 준비 해두었던 피자 도우랑 재료들과 함께 피자를 만들 테이블,
우리가 앉아서 나오는 피자를 먹을수 있게 준비된 다이닝 테이블들이 다 셋팅되어 있었다.
피자들은 메뉴가 한 네다섯가지 됐던거 같은데, 거의 다 현지에서 나고 구할수 있는 식재료들을 써서, 석류도 올리고 올리브나 등등 보통 우리가 아는 피자와는 약간 다른 퓨전이었지만 조합이 좋았다. 연구를 많이한게 보였다.
이 피자들은 사미가 코로나때 시간이 많아 음식도 하고 피자도 굽기 시작하다 이 투어까지 만들게 되었다고 ㅎㅎ
그 자리에서 바로바로 만들어서 오븐으로 구워주었다.

우리가 이 투어에 갔을때 우리까지 총 8명 정도 있었던 것 같은데(우리빼고 다 다른 지역에서 온 현지인들, 그리고 두 아재는 니즈와에서 왔는데 사미의 피자가 또 먹고싶어서 벌써 몇번 조인했다고 했다) 우리가 다 배터져 죽을때까지 계속 피자를 구워주던 사미 ㅎㅎ
그리고 마지막은 직접만든 티라미수 디저트까지 완벽했다.
아 참 그리고 끝엔 본인 캐릭터가 들어가있는 엽서에 모두에게 손편지도 써줬다. 본인의 투어가 기억에 남기를 바란다면서.
이런 섬세한 디테일 너무 좋다.

피자를 너무 좋아하는 남편은 다 너무 좋았단다. 좋아하는 오만에서, 산에서, 투어도 하고 방금 만들어진 피자도 배터지게 먹고 ㅋㅋ





그 다음번에 우리가 직접 차를 몰고 올라 갔을때는 산에있는 숙소에 묵었다.
오픈한지 얼마 안됐는데도 (처음 투어로 왔을때 공사중이었엇음) 이미 유명해져서 마지막 작은방 하나 겨우 구했다 ㅎㅎ

여기도 마찬가지로 예전에 살던 집을 숙소로 바꾼 곳. 다들 보면 할아버지 할머니가 살던 곳을 개조해서 만든 곳이고 그 가족들이 운영하는 것 같았다.

보통 이런 곳은 저녁이랑 그 다음날 조식까지 포함해 있어서 식사 걱정은 안해도 됨 ㅎㅎ
동네 한바퀴 돌고와서 옥상에서 해지는 것도 보고 릴렉스한 시간 보냈다.

그 다음날엔 조식도 먹고 봐도 봐도 질리지않는 마운틴 뷰 감상하면서 느긋느긋 커피도 마시고.

오만은 수도 무스캇이랑 니즈와같은 큰 시티 가지않는 이상 거의 조용한것 같다.
아부다비에서 항상 바쁘게 지내다가 가끔 이렇게 주말에 와서 힐링하기 좋은 곳.

예전에 친구 아부다비 잠깐왔었을때 주말에 또 운전해서 여기 같이 왔었는데 다행히도 좋아했었다 ㅎㅎ
산 자연 좋아하는 사람이라면 누구나 좋아할듯.

I wrote a blog post yesterday about our weekend trip to Oman,
but since Jebel Akhdar (literally “Green Mountain” lol—though the Arabic pronunciation is tricky) is a place we love so much that I have a lot to say about it, I decided to write a separate post. I think we’ve been to this mountain four or five times total. I’d love to go again. 


The first time we went,
we booked a same-day day trip on the spot at Bait AlSabah, the guesthouse near Nizwa City that I wrote about yesterday. The owner drove us there in his own car and showed us around. 
Looking back, both Nezwa and the Bait AlSabah guesthouse were less famous back then, which is why I was able to go with the owner like that. Now they’ve become so famous and packed with tourists every time I go. Especially Bait AlSabah seems like most of them are just group tourists stopping by briefly to grab a coffee or use the restroom during their tours in the area. 


Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain) Hike

It takes about an hour to drive up here from Bait Al Sabah. The road is winding and steep, so when driving up, you have to pass a checkpoint where soldiers check whether incoming vehicles are capable of making the climb.

Unless you have a 4x4 or an all-wheel-drive vehicle, you’re not allowed to go up.
Seeing all the small sedans and other cars parked at the checkpoint, it seems many people go up and down via hotels on the mountain or local tour guides. 

The road down the mountain is a steep 30-kilometer descent. Using the brakes continuously can be dangerous, as they may overheat. A 4WD or AWD vehicle is recommended. An automatic transmission is fine as long as it has a manual mode, since you'll want to use 1st or 2nd gear for most of the descent to take advantage of engine braking.

It was our fourth time visiting this mountain, and we drove up in our Sorento. At the checkpoint, the soldier inspected the car thoroughly (probably because it’s not a common sight in Oman) before letting us through. 
Alternatively, you can rent a car from a rental shop in Nizwa or the town below and drive up. If you’re confident driving a manual transmission up a steep mountain… I recommend it.

Anyway, once you park the car and walk up, you can wander through the narrow alleys between these tightly packed houses (there are also a lot of stairs - I see why the people here are generally so slim, haha). 

If you wander around aimlessly, you’ll eventually come across a hiking trail leading up the mountain. 
As I mentioned in my Oman travel post, wherever you go in Oman, if you follow the irrigation channels, you’ll come across mountains, fields, and mosques haha.
It’s a place where you can see the lives of the real locals.
Even though I’ve been there four or five times, it’s a place I want to visit again. 



Next, we went to a small village called Al Sugra. 

This is a place that only true locals would know about or even venture into. The road doesn’t even show up properly on Google Maps, haha (the people in this area don’t use Google Maps much either).
The hotel location shows, though. It seems to have become famous because of a unique hotel.

Originally, about 200 people lived in this mountain village, but now they’ve all moved to the city, so no one lives there anymore. They preserved the old houses and turned them into a hotel, making it a hidden tourist spot nestled in the mountains. 
How did they build houses and settle down in such a cliff-like spot deep in the mountains? I’m curious about the story of the first person or family who moved here and started living here. 

From the point where cars can’t go, you have to walk, and it’s mostly stairway -
Since it’s hard to carry all the guests’ luggage up and down the stairs, they’ve set up a cable system to move the bags. It’s pretty cool, haha.

When you come here, all you hear are birds, animals, and insects as there’s literally nothing else around, haha.

It kind of feels like a place where monks leave the secular world to retreat deep into the mountains to pray, haha. 
There’s also a famous café here in Oman. It’s a great spot to stop by for coffee or dessert.

There’s a small mosque, too. So cute!


The second time we visited, we looked up the Soprano Pizza Experience because we wanted to try something different. 
We first found out about this place when we were here with Neez and searched for pizza places on Google Maps—this place came up. My husband called to check, and they explained that it wasn’t a restaurant that sells pizza, but rather a tour where you explore the neighborhood and then make your own pizza. So, the next time we came to this neighborhood, we signed up in advance. 

Mr. Sami, who was born in this neighborhood, gathers a group of people and takes them on a tour of the neighborhood, which is now completely deserted. 
He explains everything from how houses were built in the past and what materials were used, to pointing out that this used to be a supermarket, that house was where another family lived, and this one has become a small museum, and so on.
It’s a bit sad that people have all left and no one lives in a place with such fresh air and natural beauty, but I was amazed at how well it’s been preserved. 
Then he took us to the house where he used to live and showed us the traces of his life there. Here’s the living room, the kitchen, and the master bedroom—his father’s wardrobe, the TV, and so on. Though it was old, you could still sense that people had lived there. 
When we went up to the rooftop, everything was already set up: a table for making pizza with the dough and ingredients he had prepared the day before, 
and dining tables where we could sit and eat the fresh pizza. 
I think there were about four or five pizza options on the menu. Since they used mostly local ingredients—like pomegranate seeds and olives—it was a fusion style slightly different from the pizzas we’re used to, but the combinations worked really well. You could tell he’d put a lot of thought into it. 
Sami told us that he started cooking and baking pizzas during the pandemic when he had a lot of free time, and that eventually led him to create this tour, haha.
They made the pizzas right there on the spot and baked them in the oven.
When we went on this tour, I think there were about eight of us in total (all locals from other regions except for us, and two guys who were from Nizwa—they said they’d joined the tour several times already because they wanted to eat Sami’s pizza again). Sami kept baking pizza for us until we were all stuffed to the brim, haha. 
And to top it all off, the homemade tiramisu dessert was perfect. 
Oh, and at the end, he even wrote handwritten notes to everyone on postcards featuring his own character. He said he hoped his tour would be memorable. 
I really love these thoughtful details. 

My husband, who loves pizza so much, said he loved everything. He got to be in Oman, which he loves, go on a tour in the mountains, and eat freshly made pizza until he was stuffed, haha.
 


The next time we drove up ourselves, we stayed at a lodge in the mountains. 
Even though it hadn’t been open long (it was under construction when we first came on the tour), it had already become famous, so we barely managed to snag the last small room, haha.
This place is also a former home that’s been converted into a guesthouse. It looked like it had been renovated from a house where the owners’ grandparents used to live, and it seemed to be run by the family. 

Usually, places like this include dinner and breakfast the next morning, so you don’t have to worry about meals, haha.
After taking a walk around the neighborhood, I watched the sunset from the rooftop and enjoyed some relaxing time. 

The next day, I had breakfast and sipped coffee at a leisurely pace while enjoying the mountain view - a sight I could never get bored of.

Oman seems pretty quiet unless you go to the capital, Muscat, or big cities like Nizwa. 
It’s a great place to come for a weekend getaway and recharge after always being so busy in Abu Dhabi. 

A while back, when a friend visited Abu Dhabi briefly, we drove here together on the weekend, and luckily, they really liked it haha.
I think anyone who loves mountains and nature would enjoy it.
