아부다비에서 산지 10년차 - 당연히 이곳의 맛집들에 대해서 할말이 너무 많다.
일단 나는 먹는걸 너무너무 좋아하고, 많이 먹는다. 항상 배고프고 항상 뭘 먹을지 생각한다 ㅎㅎ
오늘은 우리가 자주가는 현지 찐맛집들을 소개해보려고 한다. 어디를 쓸까 생각하면서 배가 고파 온다ㅎㅎ
아부다비 제일 처음 왔을때는 이상하게도 한식이 그렇게 땡겨서(싱가폴 살 때도 한식 안먹고 잘 살았는데 말야) 근처에 있는 한식집만 먼저 찾아다니고,
다른 맛난집들은 어디를 가야할지, 뭘 먹어야 잘 먹었다고 소문이 날까 하면서 구글 평점 높은 곳만 찾아 다녔던 것 같다.
몇 번 여기저기 다녀보니까, 솔직히 여기 구글 평점은 잘 못믿겠더라ㅎㅎ 물론 괜찮은 곳도 있지만 리뷰만 보고 갔다가 아닌 곳 들도 많아서.
예를 들면, 전에 한 동료가 자긴 태국음식 안좋아한다면서 평가를 해대길래, 태국은 가보고서 하는말이냐 했더니 안가봤단다.
그 나라에 직접가서 제대로 된 음식을 먹어본 것도 아니면서 그 나라 음식 평가는 왜하는거임? ㅋㅋ
그 때 당시만해도 아시안 음식은 별로 맛있는곳이 없었다. 맛있는곳을 안갔으니까 안좋아했겠지... 에휴.
그래도 지금은 맛있는곳 / 그 나라 사람들이 와서 운영하는 곳들도 많아져서 아시안들이 아부다비 살기 진짜 좋아졌다 ㅎㅎ
아무튼, 이제는 아부다비에 오래 살다보니 관광객들에게 유명한 곳 보다 자주 찾게 되는 식당들이 생겼다.
일단 이 곳들은 주차장 문제도 없고, 특별히 화려하지는 않지만 부담없이 방문할 수 있는 곳들이다.
여기 현지인이나 거주자들은 잘 아는 곳들 이겠지만, 사실 개인적으로 더 안 유명해졌으면 좋겠는 맛집들. ㅎㅎ
Najd Palace 나지드 팔라스
여긴 한국에서 손님오면 꼭 데려가는 곳.
주 메뉴는 Mandi 만디라고 하는데, 원래 예맨에서 온거라고 한다. 닭고기에 기버터밥 + 소스에 버무려 먹는다.
닭고기는 구운거, 스팀한거 등등 종류가 많아서 고를수가 있고, 밥도 고를수 있는데 나는 항상 스팀 치킨에 만디 라이스 - 여기와서 인생 처음으로 먹어본 버터밥.ㅎㅎ 맛이 없을 수가 없는 조합.
그리고 토마토+칠리로 만든 소스랑, 요거트 소스 이렇게 두개 주는데, 둘다 맛있다.
나는 개인적으로 토마토+칠리 소스 완전 사랑함. 살짝 매콤해서 버터밥이랑 잘 어울리고, 김치가 필요 없다 ㅋㅋ
남편은 빵쟁이라 방금 구워져 나온 따땃한 납작한 빵 (말라와 라고한다) 에 깨소금도 쳐져있고 바삭해서 후머스에 찍어먹으면 맛있다.
가격도 착해서 부담도 없고, 현지 사람들이나 다른 아랍권 사람들도 많이 간다.
아 그리고 여기 테이블도 있지만 손님 방들을 칸막이처럼 만들어놔서, 신발벗고 들어가서 바닥에 비닐깔고 먹을수있게 되어있다 ㅎㅎ
그 방에서 닭고기랑 밥먹고 배불러 누워서 낮잠자면 된단다.. ㅋㅋ - 실제로 한국에서 온 친구 여기서 밥먹고 혈당스파이크와서 잠들뻔 함.
아무튼 제일 심플하고 맛난 곳. 10년전부터 먹었지만 맛도 변함이 없을 뿐더러, 가격도 쬐끔밖에 안올려서 착한 식당 ㅎㅎ
아참, 여기는 그랜드모스크랑 별로 멀지 않은 곳에 있어서, 모스크 갔다가 바로 가기 좋은 곳이다.
손님들 오면 그랜드모스크랑 항상 같이 찍고 가는 코스 ㅎㅎ

Swaikhat Restaurant 스와이캇 바레인 레스토랑
바레인 음식점인데, 꼬치에 구운 고기들이 꽂혀져서 나오는 고기 전문점이다.
아랍 음식이기도 하면서, 약간 이란음식 같기도하고, 또 약간 인도음식 같기도 하다 ㅎㅎ
일단 가서 메뉴를 주문하면 따뜻하게 구워진 납작한 빵부터 준다.
우리가 가면 항상 시키는건 꼬치에 나오는 고기들 (종류 다양함)에 우리가 좋아하는 소스들 (갈릭 소스 최고) 그리고 내가 제일 좋아하는 메뉴는 Kebab Khishkhash 케밥 키쉬크하쉬? 라는 음식인데, 토마토 소스에 케밥 고기가 얹어져서 나온다.
사이드로 시킨 사프란/백미 라이스 (버터도 밥이랑 같이 먹으라고 옆에 따로 줌ㅋㅋ)에 고기랑 토마토 소스 같이 얹어서 먹으면 꿀맛!
여기서 서빙하는 그릇이랑 컵들도 귀엽다. 우리나라 옛날 도시락통 생각나는 쇠그릇 ㅎㅎ
그리고 생 양파랑 매운 고추도 사이드로 준다. 이걸 현지애들이 잘먹는진 모르겠네 매운데 ㅎㅎ
주인이 바레인 사람인지 누군진 몰라도 컨셉 잘 잡은듯. 현지인들도 많이 간다.

피자 제일 많이 시켜 먹는곳 - 남편이 제일 좋아하는 곳, 주말에 치팅데이때 제일 자주 시켜먹음 ㅋㅋ
우리가 처음와서 한국식당 이외에 찾아 다닌게 "제대로 된" 피자 집이었다.
코쟁이 남편이 피자를 너무너무 좋아해서 ㅎㅎ 몇군데를 찾아다녔는지.
이 집은 이탈리아인이 운영하는 진짜 이탈리안 피자. 10년 전이나 지금이나 퀄리티도 항상 같고 가격도 다른 피자집들에 비하면 싼 편.
나도 치팅데이에 가끔 같이 라자냐 같이 껴서 먹는데, 진짜 맛있다. 빵쟁이가 아닌 사람에게도 추천ㅋㅋ
예전에 회사에서 다같이 점심먹을때 시켜먹으면 다 맛있다고 했었다.
10년전에는 이 식당이 한군데 밖에 없었는데 최근에는 아부다비에도 몇 군데 생기면서 본점은 배달전문으로 바뀌었다.
두바이에도 생겼다고 하더라고? 잘되는거 보니까 좋다 ㅎㅎ
아이러니하게도 우리가 이탈리아 로마로 여행 갔을때, 보이는 피자집 아무데나 들어갔다가 별로 맛이 그냥 그랬어서.. 아부다비 피자 디로코 피자 생각난다고 했던 기억이 난다 ㅎㅎ
우리가 아부다비와서 잘 먹고 잘 살게 해준 1등 공신이라고 해도 될 듯 하다.

여긴 우리가 좋아하는 몇년 째 단골 베트남 쌀국수집.
베트남 음식도 다 맛있지만 태국 음식도 있고 다른 아시안 음식들도 있어서 아시안 음식 좋아하는 친구들이랑 모이기 좋다.
맛있어서 어느 순간부터 자연스레 이 곳이 모임장소가 되 버린 ㅋㅋ
그리고 이 식당 주인이 베트남에서 온 아주머니 (너무나 믿을 수 있는)ㅎㅎ 그리고 일하는 스태프들도 다 베트남 사람들이다.
아부다비에 살다가 쌀국수먹으러 이 식당가면 동아시아로 잠깐 돌아 간 느낌이라고 할까? ㅎㅎ
Pho 포 쌀국수는 무조건 시켜야됨. 항상 갈때마다 똑같이 맛있다. 쌀국수 국물을 어떻게 항상 똑같이 맛있게 잘 만들까?
장사도 잘되서 아부다비에 여러 지점이 생겼다. 이 식당 덕분에 아시아 음식 좋아하는 사람들도 많아졌을 듯.

빵쟁이 남편이 인정한 빵집 / 빵에 대해서 잘 모르는 나도 제일 좋아하는 빵집.
우리가 먹어본 빵집들 중에 특히 크로아상은 아마 아부다비에서 1등이라고 해도 될듯 하다. 가격도 다른데 비하면 나쁘지않고 항상 신선하다.
다른 빵집들 크로아상은 버터를 너무 많이 쓰는건지 좀 느끼한데 여긴 그런게 없다. 깔끔!
남편이 거의 매 토요일 치팅데이에 점심으로 크로아상을 시켜먹는 곳 ㅎㅎ
그리고 이 집은 운좋게도? 우리집 근처라 일요일에 가끔 운동끝나고 남편이랑 가서 브런치를 먹기도 하는데
요즘은 입소문타서 그런지 사람들이 많이가서 줄서야되거나 테이블 빌 때까지 기다려야된다...
다른 지점도 오픈한다는 것 같던데. 아무튼 잘되서 보기좋지만 우리가 가끔 갈때 테이블은 있었으면 좋겠다 ㅜㅜㅋ

여기도 우리가 좋아하는 아시안 음식집! 싱가폴이나 말레이시아 음식 생각나면 가서 먹거나 시켜먹는다.
나는 말레이시아에서도 살았었고 싱가폴에서도 오래살았으니 당연히 그쪽 음식이 생각 날때가 많은데
특히 싱가폴에서 일할때 점심으로 자주 먹었던 치킨라이스 (싱글리쉬로 쯔끈라이쓰) 라던지, 락사, 차꿰띠아오 등등 싱가폴이 그리워질때쯔음 / 음식들이 생각날 쯔음에 시켜먹는다.
맛은 딱 그 내가 그리워하는 생각나는 그 맛. 다른 식당들에 비하면 가격도 착하다. 그래서 둘이가면 막 세개씩 시켜먹고 그럼; ㅋㅋ
주인 아저씨가 딱봐도 식당 주인하게 생긴 푸근하고 인상좋은 인도계 말레이시아에서 온 아저씨 ㅎㅎ
우리가 싱가폴 살았다고 하니까 반겨주시더라 ㅎㅎ 그후로 단골 먹은듯 ㅋ
개인적으로 이 식당오픈했을때 너무너무 행복했다. 그리운 맛을 싱가폴까지 안가서 먹어도 되니까 ㅜㅜ

솔직히 이런 식당들은 구글 평점보고 가는게 아니라 아는사람들이 추천해주거나 데려가서 알게된 곳들이 더 많은 것 같다.
한번 좋아하면 계속 가게되고, 그러다 한번씩 다른 새로운 식당가면 우리가 자주가는 식당 갈걸 하는 후회도 되고 ㅎㅎ
앞으로도 새로운 식당을 발견하면 하나씩 기록해 보려고 한다.
이 글을 읽는 사람들도 언젠가 아부다비에 오게되면 관광객들한테 유명한 화려한 레스토랑이 아니라 현지 사람들이 자주 찾는 찐맛집을 찾아보는것도 좋을것 같다.

It’s been 10 years since I moved to Abu Dhabi - so naturally, I have a lot to say about the great restaurants here.
First of all, I absolutely love to eat, and I eat a lot. I’m always hungry and always thinking about what to eat, haha.
Today, I’d like to introduce some authentic local spots we frequent. Just thinking about which ones to write about is making me hungry, haha.
Strangely enough, when I first arrived in Abu Dhabi, I had such a craving for Korean food (even though I managed just fine without it when I lived in Singapore), so I spent my time searching only for Korean restaurants nearby.
As for other great places to eat, I remember just scouring Google for spots with high ratings, wondering where to go and what to order to make a good impression.
After trying a few places here and there, to be honest, I found I couldn’t really trust the Google ratings here, haha. Of course, there are some decent places, but there were also many places I went to based solely on reviews that turned out to be a letdown.
For example, a colleague once went on and on about how much they disliked Thai food, so I asked, “Are you saying that after actually visiting Thailand?” and they admitted they’d never been there.
Why would you even review a country’s food when you haven’t actually been there to try the real thing? Haha.
Back then, there just weren’t many places serving good Asian food. I guess he didn’t like it because he never went to the good ones… Sigh.
Still, now there are so many delicious places - and restaurants run by people from those countries—that life in Abu Dhabi has really gotten a lot better for Asians, haha.
Anyway, now that I’ve lived in Abu Dhabi for a long time, I’ve found restaurants I visit more often than the ones famous among tourists.
First of all, these places don’t have parking issues, and while they aren’t particularly fancy, they’re places you can visit without feeling pressured.
Locals and residents here probably know these places well, but honestly, these are the hidden gems I’d personally prefer to keep under the radar. Haha
Najd Palace
This is the place I always take guests from Korea.
The main dish is called “Mandi,” which is said to have originated in Yemen. It’s chicken served with ghee-infused rice and a sauce.
There are many types of chicken to choose from - grilled, steamed, and more - and you can also choose your rice. I always go for steamed chicken with Mandi rice - the first time I ever tried butter rice was right here. Haha. It’s a combination that’s impossible not to love.
They serve two sauces: one made with tomato and chili, and a yogurt sauce. Both are delicious.
Personally, I absolutely love the tomato-chili sauce. It’s slightly spicy, which pairs perfectly with the butter rice—I don’t even need kimchi. Haha.
My husband loves bread, so he enjoys the warm, flatbread (called “malawa”) that comes straight out of the oven. It’s sprinkled with sesame seeds and is crispy, so it’s delicious dipped in hummus.
The prices are reasonable, so it’s not a financial burden, and lots of locals and people from other Arab countries go there too.
Oh, and while there are tables here, they’ve set up private dining rooms partitioned off like cubicles—you take off your shoes, step inside, and eat on plastic sheets laid out on the floor, haha.
You can just eat chicken and rice in one of those rooms, get full, and then lie down for a nap… lol - In fact, a friend from Korea almost fell asleep here after eating a meal that caused a blood sugar spike.
Anyway, it’s the simplest and tastiest place around. I’ve been eating here for 10 years, and not only has the taste stayed the same, but the prices have only gone up a tiny bit - it’s such a reasonable restaurant, haha.
Oh, and it’s not too far from the Grand Mosque, so it’s a great spot to stop by right after visiting the mosque.
Whenever I have guests over, we always make it a point to take a photo with the Grand Mosque before heading here, haha.
Swaikhat Bahraini Restaurant
It’s a Bahraini restaurant that specializes in meat served on skewers.
The food is Arab, but it also has a bit of an Iranian flavor and a hint of Indian cuisine, haha.
When you go there and order, they start by serving you warm, flatbread.
Whenever we go, we always order the meat skewers (there’s a wide variety), our favorite sauces (the garlic sauce is the best), and my absolute favorite dish is something called “Kebab Khishkhash”—it’s kebab meat served on top of tomato sauce.
It’s absolutely delicious when you scoop up the meat and tomato sauce with the saffron or white rice we ordered on the side (they even give you butter on the side to eat with the rice, haha)!
The bowls and cups they use here are cute, too. They remind me of the old-school metal lunchboxes from back home, haha.
They also serve raw onions and spicy chili peppers on the side. I’m not sure if the locals actually eat these—they’re pretty spicy, haha.
I don’t know if the owner is from Bahrain or not, but they’ve really nailed the concept. Lots of locals go there, too.
Pizza Di Rocco
The place we order pizza from the most - my husband’s favorite spot; we order from here most often on our weekend “cheat day"
When we first moved here, the first type of restaurant we sought out besides Korean restaurants was a “real” pizza place.
My husband, who’s a total pizza fanatic, loves it so much haha - we must have searched high and low for a few places.
This place serves authentic Italian pizza run by an Italian. The quality has remained consistent over the past 10 years, and the prices are on the cheaper side compared to other pizza places.
I also occasionally order lasagna to go with it on my cheat days, and it’s really delicious. I’d recommend it even to people who aren’t big on bread haha
Back when we used to order it for lunch at the office, everyone said it was delicious.
Ten years ago, there was only one location, but recently a few have opened in Abu Dhabi, so the original location has switched to being a delivery-only spot.
I heard they opened one in Dubai, too? It’s great to see them doing so well, haha.
Ironically, when we traveled to Rome, Italy, we walked into just any pizza place we saw, but the taste was just so-so… I remember saying it reminded me of Pizza Di Rocco in Abu Dhabi, haha.
I’d say it’s the number one reason we’ve been able to eat well and live comfortably since coming to Abu Dhabi.
Vietnames Pho
This is our favorite Vietnamese pho restaurant - we’ve been regulars here for years.
While all the Vietnamese food is delicious, they also serve Thai and other Asian dishes, so it’s a great spot to meet up with friends who love Asian food.
It’s so good that, before we knew it, this place naturally became our go-to hangout spot, lol
Plus, the owner is a lady from Vietnam (who’s incredibly trustworthy), haha, and all the staff are Vietnamese too.
When I go to this restaurant for pho while living in Abu Dhabi, it feels like I’ve briefly traveled back to East Asia, you know? Haha
You absolutely have to order the pho. It tastes just as good every single time I go. How do they manage to make the pho broth taste so consistently delicious?
Business is booming, so they’ve opened several branches in Abu Dhabi. I bet this restaurant has helped increase the number of people who love Asian food.
