아부다비 리와 사막 주말 드라이브 - Liwa Desert weekend drive

우리가 아부다비에서 날씨 좋을때 자주 가는 곳 중 하나 - 리와 사막!

중동하면 당연히 떠오르는 사막이랑 낙타 이미지.
너무나 당연한 얘기지만제일 드라마틱하고 멋지다. 사람들이 상상하는것보다 더.
친구나 지인이나 누가 중동이나 아부다비/두바이 온다고 하면 꼭! 무족권 가라고 추천하는 곳.
아니면 트립어드바이저에서 흔히 볼 수있는 사막 듄 사파리라도 가라고 한다. 리와 사막이 최고지만 리와 사막이 아니더라도 사막은 무조건 추천.

아부다비 시티에서 리와 사막까지는 2시간 40분 정도가 걸린다.

우리가 보통 네비에 찍고가는 곳은 모립 듄 Moreeb Dune.
거기에서 겨울 시즌에 이벤트도 많이 열린다.

아부다비 시티 나와서 고속도로가 속도 제한이 140, 160km 까지 올라가서 신나게 밟을수도 있다 ㅎㅎ

이 도로를 타고 서쪽으로 Al Mirfa 알 미르파를 거쳐서 쭉 가다보면 사우디로 향하는 길.
그리고 우리나라가 지은 원자력발전소 알바라카도 가는 길.
그리고 아랍에미레이트의 기름의 원전인 곳도 있다.


리와 사막은 그 고속도로에서 남쪽 다른 고속도로를 타는데 약간은 길게 느껴지지만 또 나름 다른 동네 가는거라 드라이브겸 갈만 하다. 가끔 낙타들도 보고 ㅋ

중간 중간에 주유소 (ADNOC) 도 있으니 화장실 걱정 안해도 됨 ㅎㅎ Moreeb Dune 가기 전에도 하나 있으니 거기서 볼일 보고 물도 사고 음료수나 간식거리 사도 됨.

낙타안녕?
이건 다른 사막에서 찍은 낙타.
낙타들은 보통 가족단위로 여기저기 돌아다니면서 풀뜯어먹고 하는데, 다들 주인이 있어서 주인이있는 농장으로 알아서들 돌아온다고 한다.
아주 아주 가끔 도로에도 있어서 운전할때 조심해야한다.
내 지인들에게서 밤에 운전하다 낙타를 쳐서 사고난 얘기도 들음.


이제 도착해서 차는 주차해놓고 사막으로 걸어가면 된다.
우리 차는 4x4가 아니기때문에 사막에서 운전은 상상도 시도도 안해봄 ㅎㅎ
모래언덕을 돌아다니는 투어다니는 애들은 타이어에 바람도 빼고 이리저리 롤러코스터처럼 올라갔다 내려갔다 전문가들처럼 잘 돌아다닌다 (지네 직업이니까 아무래도).



아무튼 우리는 보통 의자 두개랑(아니면 요가매트 두개, 차 트렁크에 항상있음ㅎㅎ) 음료수넣은 아이스박스 하나정도 들고간다.

사막위에선 신발벗고 맨발로가는게 편하다.

스텝퍼가 따로 없는 운동 ^.,^
나는 맨날 사진찍느라 뒤쳐지고 남편은 좋은 자리 찾아 나서고 ㅎㅎ


한 10-20분을 사막에서 걸어다니다 이런 명당에 자리 잡는다.

어떻게 찍어도 잘 나오지 않는 이 리와 사막은 눈으로 보는게 절경이다.
산처럼 크고 웅장 하다.
지역도 얼마나 넓은지 마냥 걸어가다 길이라도 잃으면 쥐도새도없이 죽을듯 ㅜㅜㅋ

나는 사막에서 해지는 선셋사진을 찍기위해서 이리저리 돌아다닌다.

그러다 이런 절경을 볼 수있다. 역시 눈으로 보는것보다 덜 나옴.


밑에 시진들은 다 다른 때에 왔을때 찍은 선셋.

이 뷰 보러 다섯시간 왕복해서 다녀온다 ㅎㅎ



아부다비 와서 시간 좀있으면 차 렌트해서 무조건 사막가는걸 추천한다!
중동에서 제일 멋진 곳. 추천추천.

One of our favorite places to visit in Abu Dhabi when the weather is nice - the Liwa Desert!

When you think of the Middle East, images of deserts and camels naturally come to mind.
It goes without saying, but it’s truly dramatic and stunning - even more so than people imagine.
If a friend or acquaintance tells me they’re coming to the Middle East or Abu Dhabi/Dubai, I always - without fail - recommend they go there.
Or, if not, I tell them to at least go on a desert dune safari, which you often see on TripAdvisor. The Liwa Desert is the best, but even if it’s not the Liwa Desert, I definitely recommend visiting the desert.

It takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes to get from Abu Dhabi City to the Liwa Desert.

The place we usually set on the GPS is Moreeb Dune.
There are also many events held there during the winter.


Once you leave Abu Dhabi City, the speed limit on the highway goes up to 140 or 160 km/h, so you can really step on it haha

If you take this road westward through Al Mirfa, you’ll eventually reach the route heading toward Saudi Arabia.
It’s also the route to Al Barakah, the nuclear power plant built by South Korea.
And there’s the place that serves as the UAE’s oil hub.


To get to Liwa and the desert, you have to take another highway south from that one. It feels a bit long, but since you’re heading to a different area, it’s worth the drive. You might even spot some camels along the way, haha.


There are gas stations (ADNOC) along the way, so you don’t have to worry about restrooms, haha. There’s one right before you reach Moreeb Dune, so you can use the restroom there and buy water, drinks, or snacks.



Camels usually roam around in family groups, in the desert, grazing here and there. Apparently, they all have owners and find their way back to their respective farms on their own.


Now that we’ve arrived, we just park the car and walk into the desert.
Since our car isn’t a 4x4, we wouldn’t even dream of trying to drive in the desert, haha.
The Desert Safari tour guides who drive around the sand dunes let some air out of their tires and navigate the ups and downs like a roller coaster - they handle it like pros (well, it is their job, after all).



Anyway, we usually bring two chairs (or two yoga mats - we always keep them in our car, haha) and a cooler for drinks.

It’s more comfortable to take off your shoes and walk barefoot in the desert.



It’s a workout without needing a stepper 🥲
I’m always lagging behind taking photos, while my husband goes off to find a good spot, haha.


After walking around the desert for about 10–20 minutes, we settle down at a prime spot like this.


No matter how you photograph it, the Liwa Desert doesn’t do justice to the breathtaking scenery you see with your own eyes.
It’s as vast and majestic as a mountain.


I wander around the desert trying to capture the sunset.

That’s when I come across scenes like this. As expected, the photos don’t do it justice compared to seeing it with my own eyes.


The photos are all sunsets I took on different visits.

I travel five hours round-trip just to see this view haha




If you have some free time while you're in Abu Dhabi, I highly recommend renting a car and heading out to the desert!
It's the most amazing place in the Middle East. Highly recommended!
